This is us
GöttingenZero is a climate protection organization of committed citizens, founded in June 2020. In times of paralyzing crisis scenarios, we want to empower students, professionals and retirees to take effective action against the climate crisis. As a local group of GermanZero, we support the goal of making Germany climate neutral by 2035 – and Göttingen by 2030!
GermanZero has written a 1.5-degree-legislation package with volunteering scientists that includes legal solutions at the federal level. In collaboration, we created a climate city plan for Göttingen. The package of measures for climate neutrality by 2030 was handed over to the city. At the same time, we support the Germany-wide strategy of exerting further pressure from below via municipal climate petitions and referendums.
This motivates us
Global climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions threatens the livelihoods of all people on Earth. At the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, it was therefore decided to limit global warming to as close as possible to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. The German Bundestag unanimously ratified this “Paris Agreement” in 2016.
However, if we do not drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions immediately and achieve climate neutrality through zero emissions within a few years, we will not reach the 1.5 degree target – with unforeseeable consequences for life on our planet.
We have a concrete vision of what a climate-neutral Göttingen could look like and have written a Climate City Plan for Göttingen.
